DTF Transfer Press Instructions
How to Apply Your DTF Transfers: A Step-by-Step Guide
Congratulations on receiving your Direct-to-Film (DTF) transfers! Follow these simple instructions to ensure a perfect, durable application every time. These steps are optimized for a professional heat press, which we highly recommend for best results.
Step 1: Pre-Press the Garment
-
Heat Press Setting: Set your heat press to 325°F (165°C).
-
Time: 10-15 seconds.
-
Action: Place your garment on the heat press and close the platen for 10-15 seconds. This removes any moisture, wrinkles, and pre-shrinks the fabric, which helps the transfer adhere perfectly and prevents bubbling.
-
For Hoodies & Thicker Items: For items with zippers, seams, or pockets, use a heat press pillow or pad to ensure a flat, even surface for pressing.
Step 2: Position the Transfer
-
Placement: Carefully place your DTF transfer, image side up, onto the pre-pressed garment.
-
Pro Tip: Use a heat-resistant ruler or laser guide to ensure your design is centered and straight.
Step 3: The First Press (The Application)
-
Heat Press Setting: Maintain the temperature at 325°F (165°C).
-
Time: 15 seconds.
-
Pressure: Firm, heavy pressure. Use a pressure gauge if your heat press has one; aim for a reading of 6-8 (or a heavy feel).
-
Action: Close the heat press and apply firm pressure for exactly 15 seconds. This fuses the transfer to the garment's fibers.
Step 4: Cooling and Peeling (The "Cold Peel")
-
Important Note: DTF transfers require a cold peel. Attempting to peel the film while it's hot will ruin the transfer.
-
Action: Open the heat press and immediately remove the garment. Place it on a flat, clean surface and allow it to cool completely. This typically takes 1-2 minutes. The transfer should feel cool to the touch.
-
The Peel: Once cool, gently begin to peel the clear film backing away from a corner of the design. Peel slowly and at a consistent angle. If the design starts to lift, stop, press the film back down, and allow it to cool for a little longer before trying again.
Step 5: The Second Press (The Final Cure)
-
Purpose: This step is crucial for "curing" the adhesive, increasing wash durability, and creating a soft, smooth finish.
-
Heat Press Setting: Maintain 325°F (165°C).
-
Time: 5 seconds.
-
Pressure: Medium pressure.
-
Action: Place a Teflon sheet, parchment paper, or kraft paper over the peeled design. This protects the transfer from the heat platen. Press for a quick 5 seconds. This final press melts the adhesive into the fibers, creating a long-lasting bond.
Care Instructions for Your Finished Garment
To ensure the longevity of your new DTF-printed garment, follow these simple care instructions:
-
Wash inside-out.
-
Wash with cold water.
-
Tumble dry on low heat or hang dry for best results.
-
Do not iron directly on the design.
-
Do not use bleach or harsh detergents.
Following these steps will ensure your design remains vibrant and durable for years to come. Happy pressing!
